The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) is a nationally recognised ranking system used across Australia to determine a student’s eligibility for university admission. It is not a simple exam score or a percentage; rather, it is a percentile ranking that compares a student’s overall academic performance against all other students of the same age group in their state or territory. The ATAR ranges from 0.00 to 99.95, in increments of 0.05. For instance, if a student receives an ATAR of 90.00, it means they have performed better than 90% of their peers and are in the top 10% of their cohort.

The ATAR is calculated based on a student’s performance in their final year of secondary education, typically Year 12. Each state has its own curriculum and assessment authority, but the results are scaled and standardised to ensure fairness across different subjects. This scaling process accounts for variations in subject difficulty and competition levels, meaning students are neither advantaged nor disadvantaged based on the subjects they choose. The final ATAR is then derived from the aggregate of scaled subject scores.

Universities primarily use the ATAR as a key selection tool for undergraduate course admissions. Different courses and institutions set specific ATAR requirements depending on demand and competition. Highly competitive programs such as medicine, law, and engineering often require higher ATARs, while other programs may have more flexible entry thresholds.
